dc.description.abstract | DISSERTATION: The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of staff development on teaching in secondary schools of Katikamu County, Luweero district. The study was based on three objectives, along which the purpose of study was fulfilled. These include 1) to investigate whether staff development programmes exist in secondary schools of Katikamu county; ii) ascertain the forms of staff development that exist in secondary schools of Katikamu county; iii) to assess the adequacy of staff development programmes in secondary schools in Katikamu county, iv) to find out the influence of staff development on teaching in secondary schools, Katikamu county, and v) to find out ways of improving on staff development. The study was a cross-sectional survey and particularly qualitative. The instruments of data collection used included questionnaires and interview guide. The data collected was presented and or, interpreted quantitatively and qualitatively under respective themes that reflect the research objectives and questions. In such a case, it was revealed that staff development was not a common activity for most of the schools in Katikamu County. Accordingly, there were limited specific staff development programmes. As such, the availability of staff development was not satisfactory. In addition, whereas some teachers that might have attended some staff development programmes, like seminars, workshops and in-service, gained new skills of teaching, others did not. This was because of the ineffectiveness and inefficiency. | en_US |
