The Perceptions of Teachers and Students on the Factors Contributing To the High Failure Rates in Mathematics at Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) Examinations in Mayuge District
(Islamic Universiy In Uganda, 2008) Mayanja, Moses
This research was designed to investigate the perceptions of teachers and students on the high rate failure rate in mathematics at Uganda ordinary certificate of education in Mayuge district. The study was conducted in Imanyiro sub-county, Mayuge District. It’s one of the districts which registers high failure rates in mathematics at U.C.E.The researcher used a descriptive survey design with quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study covered a total of 108 respondents, representing 90 students, 12 teachers and 8 head teachers. This sample was considered representative and manageable, given the limited time for the research. The researcher adopted largely quantitative research methods in collection of data. Qualitative methods were also used to some extent to provide secondary data. A questionnaire was used as the main instrument in data collection. Data was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative method, which reduced data to percentages and frequencies. This study revealed that students with high confidence in mathematics perform better than students with low confidence. This suggested that high confidence in mathematics is an important outcome on its own. The study further revealed that the studying environment in class impacts on achievement in mathematics for both boys and girls, and the teacher is instrumental in creating a conducive classroom setting and stimulating atmosphere for constructive learning of mathematics. However, the study also revealed no significant gender differences in students’ interest in mathematics. The study recommends that there is need to strengthen the existing educational policies especially those of minimum requirement as formulated to enhance students facilitation to learn. This is through provision of instruction materials, textbooks and ensuring that teachers are qualified and work as a team to enhance achievement in mathematics.

Interaction in this case refers to the process that bring lecturers and students in direct contact when the former is teaching either by imparting new knowledge to the later or by attending to their learning needs The study was conducted at IUIU. The study was guided by two Hypotheses i.e. Increased class sizes of students do not affect to a high extent lecturers’ ability to effectively provide direct teaching services. Increased class sizes do not affect to a high extent lecturers’ ability to effectively attend to students’ individual learning needs The study used cross-sectional survey design. The respondents used in the study consisted of faculty deans, lecturers and students. The data was collected using questionnaires and interview guides. Data from questionnaires was analyzed quantitatively. Testing of Hypothesis was carried out using Chi- square(x2) and data recorded from interviews with faculty deans was qualitatively analyzed. The findings revealed that increased class sizes adversely affected the two dimensions of lecturer- student interaction at IUIU. On the aspect of teaching, 72.7% of lecturers and 84.4% of students said increased class size decreases lecturer’s ability to teach. Among the teaching services adversely affected are. Attracting attention of students, communicating so that each student hears very well and assessing every student’s weakness and strength effectively. On the other hand, 79.6% of students and 64.2% of lecturers said that increased size of students’ classes decreases the ability of lecturers to attend to students learning needs. Aspects found to be detrimentally affected were:- Time for lecturers to be available and accessible to students, and ability to counsel and guide all students in need of how to appropriately change their perspectives about what is taught. In view of the above, the following recommendation were suggested: Class sizes to be reduced to manageable sizes to enable lecturers carry out meaningful assessment, more lecturers should be recruited, to create desirable lecturer-student ratio, need for public address system so that lecturers are not strained while communicating to students, teaching workload for each lecturer to be reduced to allow ample time for lecturers to attend students’ learning needs.

(Islamic Universiy In Uganda, 2016) Ahmed, Abdikarim
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOLGOVERNANCE AND PRIMARY EDUCATION SERVICE DELIVERY IN UPE SCHOOLS IN KAMPALA CENTRAL DIVISION ABDIGHANI ABDIKARIM AHMED, October, 2016 ABSTRACT This study explored the relationship between governance principles and education service delivery in UPE schools in Kampala Central division. The objectives of the study were to; examine the relationship between accountability and education service delivery in UPE schools in Kampala Central division, examine the relationship between transparency and education service delivery in UPE schools in Kampala Central division and examine the relationship between participation and education service delivery in UPE schools in Kampala Central division. The study employed a co relational research design to establish how each governance principle relates with education service delivery in UPE schools in Kampala Central division. A sample of 181 respondents was selected from study population of 335 persons. These were selected using census and stratified sampling techniques. Data was collected using self administered questionnaires and face to face interviews. Pearson’s correlations were used to analyze the relationship between dependent and independent variables of the study. Multiple regression analysis was also used to determine the most significant predictor variable among governance principles. Research findings based on Pearson’s correlations analysis revealed that all the three governance principles had a significant relationship with education service delivery in UPE schools in Kampala Central division. On the other hand, multiple regression analysis indicated that community participation is the most significant predictor of education service delivery in UPE schools in Kampala Central division. Its relationship with education service delivery is up to 0.740; its effect on the sample is 0.548 while its effect on the population is 0.545. To improve education service delivery in UPE schools in Kampala Central division, the study recommends that efforts should be geared towards strengthening the capacity of the existing school management committees and PTA so that such committees can reprimand or even dismiss all those head teachers that fail to account for government funds. Moreover, apart from government auditors, other education actors like NGOs, regulatory institutions and private professional auditing firms also need to be allowed to carry out regular performance audits in schools since many government agents are known to be corrupt and fraudulent. The researcher also suggests that annuals school performance reports need to be availed to the public so that they are informed about what happens in their schools.

(Islamic Universiy In Uganda, 2014) Garba, Aminu
The research is titled Falsities of the people of the Book mentioned in Qur’an and the Position of Islam on them. It comprises of five chapters. Chapter one includes an introduction, problem statement, reasons for choosing the topic, significance of the study, research methodology, etc. The research problem lies in exposing the extremism of the people of the book (the Jews and Christians), where the former alleged that Ezra is a son of God and the later alleged that Messiah is a son of God, their allegations that Jesus and his mother Mary are deities besides God, and their allegation that they are the favourite children of God, among other allegations. The research therefore aimed at refuting those falsities and explaining the Islamic position on those falsities. The research used a descriptive method using the inductive and deductive tools based on the study of Qur’an and Sunnah and the views in the books of exegesis of Qur’an. The second Chapter addressed the definition of Jews, the various names given to them, descriptions, attributes and favours as mentioned in Qur’an. The third Chapter addressed the concept of trinity, the Sonship of Ezra and the Messiah, the allegations of Godship of rabbis and Monks and the allegation of killing Jesus. The fourth Chapter addressed the position of Islam on the above allegations and attributing poverty to God and their exclusive right to paradise and their description of the prohibited and permissible. The research ended with major findings such as: The holly Qur’an exposed the falsities, dangers and interests of the people of the book, where Qur’an 5:82 described the Jews as the major enemies of Muslims. Challenges Facing the Quranic Schools (Vyuo) in Kariakoo Area, Dar Es Salaam.
(Islamic Universiy In Uganda, 2010) Kachechele, Yasin
The study is on three Quranic schools situated in Dar es Salaam at Kariakoo area. They are Madrasatu Al Qadiriyyah (i) which is at number 14 Sukuma Street, Madrastu Maalim Mzinga at number 49, Mafia Stree and Al Qadiriyyah (ii) at 19 Iringa Street (Ilala). The study was to establish the relevance of the chuo to the Muslim community whereby the enrolment in the three schools was reviewed from the year 2003 to 2007. The enrolment was continuous though with fluctuations in tempo. The staffing of the three schools was involved in the study and other Muslims were respondents mainly in two categories; one those who had the chance to study in the Quranic schools in any part of their life ( chuo alumni) and those who never had the chance (the non alumni). The study points out that the Quranic schools are still useful to the Muslims in Tanzania despite their facing obstacles from within the Muslim community and outside. Among the setbacks to the chuo are non recognition of the chuo as an educational institution, and non lack of proper foundation for its set up as the housing of the chuo is just residential houses either in the verandah or in common rooms. Further the chuo is limited since the teachers are not given proper preparations for the job which they do on trial basis. On top of that there is an extreme lack of reading material especially for the Arabic language and other related subjects in Islam. It is recommended that workers in the field of Islamic education should work towards the improvement of the chuo in Tanzania as it plays a very important role of meting basics of Islam to the young ones in the country at a time where globalization is at work and western media is in almost every household.
