Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out the teachers’ perception of principal leadership styles in secondary schools in Sokoto North Local Government, Sokoto State, Nigeria. The objectives were to examine the teacher’s perception of the extent to which rincipals leadership style is autocratic, democratic and laissez- faire leadership style. A sample of three hundred and two (302) teachers was selected from the study population of 1494. The instrument for data collection was self design questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed through SPSS version 20.0 by applying descriptive statistics percentages, freuency and means’ he findings revealed that principals’ autocratic leadership style are made of principals making decisions regarding the school progress and school leadership does not enjoy having teachers counting on it for suggestions and ideas. Overall, there is high teachers’ perception of the autocratic leadership style with overall mean of imilarly, principals’ democratic leadership style are made of principal allowing teachers to participate in determining school resources allocation and utilization, encourage teachers to participate in decision making, consult teachers before making decisions on academic programs and involves teachers in organizing academic activities in the school. Overall, there is high teachers’ perception of the principals’ democratic leadership style with overall mean of and finally Principals laissez- faire leadership style are made of Principal prefers collective decision making in the school, teachers have freedom to do as they think best in the interest of the school progress and principal leaves decisions to be made by teachers without any intervention. Overall, there is high teachers’ perception of Principals laissez- faire leadership style (with overall mean of 2.74). The researcher recommends that the principals in the schools should intensify their efforts to use their autocratic leadership style to enforce their students to perform up to the task in their academic endeavors so as to attain high level success in their studies, Principal should ensure that teachers and other members of staff in the schools are involved in a collegial decision making process in the schools and the Principal should for the benefit of their students and other members of staff avoid the habit of showing lack of concern .
