Item ACADEMIC SELF-EFFICACY AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS(Open Access Publishing Group, 2020) Matovu, MusaThis study analyzed the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic performance among university undergraduate students. The study was conducted to attest the relationship and differences between academic self-efficacy and academic performance among university undergraduate students. The sample was drawn from two universities (public and private) on which the questionnaire to measure academic self-efficacy and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) was distributed to participants (140 females and 153 males) selected from three faculties (Education, humanities, science) using stratified sampling. The universities were selected purposively. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the differences and relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic performance among university undergraduate students. The results obtained revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic performance among university undergraduate students (r (293) = .816, p < .01). There were differences noted as regards gender in the students’ academic self-efficacy (t (291) = 2.76, p < .01), and academic performance (t (291) = 1.56, p < .05). From the results of this study it is recommended that universities institute measures to enhance students’ academic self-efficacy as it has been noted that it is related to their academic performance.Item An analysis of social media usage and academic performance among undergraduate students at Islamic University in Uganda(2015) Muhammad, Isma’ilaThe study sought to analyze social media usage and undergraduate academic performance considering, types of social media used by undergraduate students. The rate of social media usage, gender differences on social media usage and relationship between social media on academic performance. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional survey design. Questionnaires were distributed to 373 respondents at main campus Mbale, Kampala campus, Female campus kabojja, and Arua campus. In verifying the hypotheses, the researcher used t –test to find out whether gender difference occurred in social media usage. Also, Pearson correlation was used to find out whether there was a relationship between social media and academic performance among undergraduate students at Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU). The finding showed that there is no gender difference on social media usage among the undergraduate students, there is a relationship between social media usage and academic performance among undergraduate students at IUIU and majority of the undergraduate students in IUIU are using Facebook as a social media of communication among themselves. The study recommended that there is need for the University to use Facebook, twitter, and WhatsApp platform for teaching and learning. Therefore, the university can use social -media to teach their students. The university should integrate social media into teaching and learning process.Item The effect of instructional materials in teaching and learning on students’ academic performance in computer studies in Masaba s s Budadiri County, Uganda(2015) Jidda, AbdulrashidThis study was aimed at finding out the effect of instructional materials on students’ academic performance in computer studies at Masaba SS Budadiri County, Uganda. This study was guided by the following objectives: To assess the effect of the visual materials on students’ academic performance. To examine the effect of audio materials on students’ academic performance. To find out the extent to which audio-visual materials influence the students’ academic performance. The study was a non-randomized pretest posttest design, using qualitative research method. A total of 70 students formed the sample for the study. The student are in senior three in Masaba SS. Census method was used to the student and were randomly designated as Visual instruction group (Experimental group 1), Audio instruction group (Experimental group 2), Audio-visual instruction group (Experimental group 3) and Traditional instruction group (Control group). A validated Computer Performance Test instrument of a reliability of 0.802 was administered. Paired sample t-test were used at significance level of 0.05. Observation was conducted on some of the students to find out their skills level at both pretest and posttest. The result showed that students taught with instructional materials for example, Visual, Audio, and Audio-visuals aided instruction is significant with visual p-value (.006), audio p-value (.045) and audio-visual p-value (.000) compared to those taught with traditional method with p-value (.138). The study recommends that teachers should be train on how to integrate instructional materials in their instructions and encouraged them to adopt the method in their teaching, and also curriculum designers should play their role in making sure that instructional materials have been used based on the subjectItem Influence of the management of science laboratories on the academic performance of students in physics in senior secondary schools, Sokoto north local government area, Nigeria.(2015) Ibrahim, Ahmad. TambariThe main purpose of this study was to find out the influence of the management of science laboratories on the academic performance of science students in physics in senior secondary schools in Sokoto North Local Government Area. The objectives were sought to determine how planning of science laboratory, organizing of science laboratory equipment and staffing of science laboratories influences academic performance of physics students in secondary schools in Sokoto North Local Government Area. A cross sectional survey design was used to gather detailed information from the respondents, purposive sampling was used in selecting sample of 302 out of 1341 students and of 19 teachers were selected using KREJCIE and MORGAN (1970) table, questionnaire entitled influence of the management of science laboratories on the academic performance of students in physics (IOTMOSLOTAPOSIPQ) was developed by the researcher after the establishment of its psychometric properties such as validity and reliability and the end of year promotion examination results of ss1 and ss2 were used. Reliability of (IOTMOSLOTAPOSIPQ) was established with the use of test-retest reliability value of 0.76 for students and teachers respectively. And validity was determined through face and content validity with a CVI value of 0.91 and 0. 73 for students and teachers respectively. Findings of the study revealed that that there is statistically insignificant relationship between planning of science laboratory equipment, organizing of science laboratory equipment, and staffing of science laboratories with students’ academic performance (r = .049, .269 and .138 respectively > 0.5). However, it was concluded that there is no influence of planning of science laboratory equipment, organizing of science laboratory equipment, and staffing of science laboratories on students’ academic performance in secondary schools of Sokoto North Local Government Area. Based on these finding it was recommended that Physics teachers should carry out appropriate planning before practical are conducted. This can be done by carefully selecting what should be taught. Effective planning can also be achieved by adopting an effecting model for planning of task, Physics teachers should organize materials to be used during physics practical. Laboratory precautions should also be taken into consideration. Physics teachers should be punctual so as to cover their scheme of work before the end of term examination begins. In general, schools should provide safety rules and manuals to all the students in order to avoid both intentional and unintentional risks.Item Management of school facilities and Academic performance in Secondary schools in Mbale district.(2012) Kamulegeya, FaridahABSTRACT After observing the worrying trend facing the education sector in the world today and Mbale district in particular, the researcher conducted a research on ‘Management of school facilities and academic performance in secondary schools in Mbale district’ The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of management of library, laboratory and classroom facilities on academic performance in secondary schools in Mbale district. The researcher adopted across-section survey design .Population of the study comprised all secondary schools, secondary teachers, secondary students, secondary deputies and Headteachers in Mbale District. Overall, a total of six schools were purposively selected in both rural and urban areas of Mbale district. 80 students and 5 teachers from each school were randomly selected as the sample of the study.552 respondents participated in the study. Questionnaires were administered to: students, teachers, deputy Headteachers and Headteachers. The researcher also used interviews, observations and document analysis in the collection of data. The data collected was analyzed by an SPSS computer programme where descriptive statistics were used and converted to percentage and finally summarized in the tables and pie charts for easy interpretation of information The researcher identified that there was great deficiency in the availability and the use of science laboratories. The study also found out that a few schools had physical libraries. Those available were inadequately equipped and the few available facilities poorly managed .Inadequacy of enough classrooms, overcrowding of these classrooms and poor daily assessment were cited to be hindering effective and efficient classroom management.. Hence, there should be stress on development of good study habits by the students. There is the necessity to develop and maintain a good library and provide more opportunities for the students to visit and spend more time in library. The researcher concluded that the less availability, misallocation and the deficiency in the use of science laboratory items lead to the wastage of resources, the effectiveness of science laboratory and lower academic performance. Science laboratory can have an enormous effect if science laboratory items are properly allocated, equalized per student and efficiently used with the standard quantity and quality. It was established that facilities were potent to high academic achievement of students, therefore Ministry of Education and Sports should provide adequate material resources to rural/urban locations to enhance teaching and learning process. The Parents Teacher Association (PTA), philanthropist and other charitable organizations are also implored to compliment the effort of government to boost the academic performance of students in secondary schools in Mbale DistrictItem Relationship between child labor and academic performance of secondary school students in Nakaloke town council, Mbale district, Uganda.(2015) Maccido, BelloThis study examined the influence of child labour on academic performance of school going children in Nakaloke Town Council. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of child labour practices prevalent among students in Nakaloke Town Council, to examine the effect of child labour on school attendance by students in Nakaloke Town Council and to ascertain the effect of child labour practices on students’ academic achievement in Nakaloke Town Council. The researcher used survey method, the population of the study comprised all the five secondary schools in Nakaloke Town Council, Mbale Uganda; with total number of 153 teachers and 45 Parents and Teachers Association members. The findings of this research were that there are a number of child labour practices among students in Nakaloke Sub County, including Hawking, Carrying luggage for money, grazing for money, shop keeping for money, slashing, and doing general manual work, Child labour affects student school attendance patterns in secondary schools in Nakaloke Sub County (r=0.530) and Child labour affects student academic achievement in secondary schools in Nakaloke Sub County (r=0.673). Finally the research recommended that the School authorities should work collaboratively with other stakeholders to ensure that child labour practices are eliminated among students in Nakaloke Sub County, School management should put in place strategies to ensure no child labour practices disrupt student school attendance given its adverse effects, and all mechanisms possible should be devised to help improve student academic achievement by eliminating all forms of child labour.Item Relationship between parents’ socio-economic status and academic performance of secondary school students in Sironko town council(2015) Lawal, BuhariThe study focused on establishing the relationship between parents’ socio-economic status on academic performance of secondary school students in Sironko town council. The study was guided by three specific objectives and these included; establishing the extent to which parents’ educational level relates with the academic performance of their children; determining the extent to which parents’ income level relates with the academic performance of their children and examining the extent to which parents’ social status relates with the academic performance of their children. The study was basically based on cross sectional survey that employed quantitative approach. The total population under study was 3545 and a sample of 341 was used. Data was collected through questionnaires. The data collected was analyzed using frequencies and percentages (univariate statistics), cross tabulation and Pearson correlation co-efficient (bivariate statistics). The study found a positive but insignificant correlation between parents’ socioeconomic status and the academic performance of their children. Findings showed that the extent to which parents’ level of education relates with the academic performance of their children was minimal (r = 0.055, sig= 0.389>0.05); and also, the extent to which parents’ income status relates with the academic performance of their children was not statistically significant (r=0.038, sig=0.553>0.05) and finally, the extent to which parents’ social status relates with the academic performance of their children was not statistically significant (r= 0.0140, sig=0.828>0.05). In conclusion, the extent to which parents’ socio-economic status relates with the academic performance of their children in Sironko town council was low. Therefore the researcher concluded that the parents’ educational status, income and social status should not be solely attributed to the academic failure of students in Sironko town council, Uganda.Item Relationship between resource management and academic performance of students in Bududa secondary schools, Uganda(2015) Makwa, Washi JosephThe study presented the relationship between resource management and academic performance of students in Bududa secondary schools, Uganda. The study was guided by three objectives: the relationship between financial resource management and academic performance, the relationship between human resource management and academic performance, and the relationship between material resources management and academic performance. A cross-sectional survey design was employed with the quantitative and qualitative research techniques. Data were collected by way of questionnaires, focus group discussions, documentary review and interviews. A set of 274 questionnaires comprising head teachers, deputy heads and directors of studies, teachers and students was used. Quantitative data collected were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), results presented and interpreted. The following were the findings of the study; Academic performance in USE Schools is affected by; insufficient funding from the government (average 92%), poor financial management (average= 83%), parents` failure to easily pay school fees and other fees , delays in funding disbursements by the government of Uganda (average= 89%), adequate textbooks (average 88%), availability of well stocked school libraries (average = 85%), laboratories with enough librarians/attendants , and material resources (mean= 84.8%). Recommendations to the study include; Strict supervision over teachers and students by administrators via attendance registers and roll-calls, regular inspection, effective monitoring of heads and teaching staff plus regular policy reviews and financial support from government, parental support and awareness of parents about their role especially fees payment and embracing financial literacy and financial management.Item School based factors and students’ academic performance At UACE in secondary schools in Mbale municipality, Uganda(2015) Hassan, Muhammad BashirThe study aimed at determining the influence of school based factors on students’ academic performance in Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examination in secondary schools in Mbale Municipality. The study was guided by three specific objectives and these included; establishing the extent to which school supervision relates with student’s academic performance; determining the extent to which teaching- learning resources relates with students’ academic performance; and establishing the extent to which teachers’ commitment relate with students’ Academic Performance at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education Examinations in secondary schools in Mbale Municipality. A cross-sectional survey research was used in this study and this employed quantitative and qualitative approaches. The total population under study was 386 and a sample of 200 was used. Data was collected through questionnaires and interview guides. The data collected was analyzed using frequencies percentages, mean and standard deviation (univariate statistics), Pearson correlation co-efficient and regression analysis (bivariate statistics). The study found no significant relationship between school supervision and student’s academic performance. Findings showed that the extent to which school supervision relates with the students’ academic performance was negligible (r = 0.064, sig= 0.376>0.05). The study found weak relationship between teaching- learning resources and students’ academic performance. Findings showed that the extent to which teaching-learning resources relates with the students’ academic performance was weak (r = 0.247, sig= 0.000<0.000). The study found weak significant relationship between teachers’ commitment and students’ academic performance. This therefore showed that the extent to which teachers’ commitment relates with the students’ academic performance was weak (r = 0.353, sig= 0.000<0.000). In conclusion, school supervision had in significant relationship with students’ academic performance. However, the extent to which the two school based factors (teaching-learning resources and teachers’ commitment) relate with the academic performance of students at UACE in secondary schools in Mbale Municipality was moderate. Recommendations of the study were; the head teachers should give more time and commitment to support teachers so as to adequately prepare for lessons. Teachers should use lesson plans with clearly assigned activities and tasks as a way of assisting the students to engage in the learning activities productively. The head teachers and education policy makers should advocate for teacher guides about structuring of lesson plans. In-service training programmes’ should be initiated to address specific man power needs for teachers
