There is no significant relationship between socioeconomic status and science students’ academic performance. There is no significant relationship between students’ attitude and their academic performance. The “Undergraduate Students academic performance questionnaire” (USPQ) with a reliability coefficient of 0.801 was administered on 210 students selected from three departments out of seven department in faculty of science in Islamic University in Uganda using the simple random sampling method. To analyze the data, the Pearson product moment correlation statistical tool was used. This formed the basis of the detailed summary, conclusions and recommendations. The objectives were to establish how the; observance of time management influenced students’ academic performance, giving of rewards influenced students’ academic performance, and administration of punishments influenced students’ academic performance. The study employed a cross sectional survey design. Questionnaires were the main instruments of data collection in addition to interview guide and document review. Four private secondary schools were purposively selected in Mbale Municipality of Mbale District in which the study was conducted. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson co-relation co-efficient techniques by SPSS (Version 20.0). According to the statistical results in the model summary, administration of punishments was the major predictor, followed by giving of rewards. However, giving rewards influenced students’ academic performance only when combined with administration of punishments. Observance of time management as a variable was excluded from the model summary which implied that it had no significant influence on students’ academic performance. It was concluded that observation of time management had no significant influence on students’ academic performance; giving of rewards significantly influenced students’ academic performance and administration of punishments had a significant influence on students’ academic performance in private secondary schools of Mbale Municipality. The study recommended sschool administrators to properly and appropriately plan for the time in schools and also emphasize that timetables are respected. Rewards need to be more pronounced and given enough awareness so as to enable students comprehend them better. Head teachers should design proper ways of handling punishments. Disciplinary committees therefore need to engage students in dialogue rather than cruel punishments where need be in terms of decision-making and be given powers and authority to execute their duties. School timetables need to provide time for counseling and guidance to students so as to prevent occurrence of offences rather than punishing the offenders.Item Influence of Discipline Management on Students’ Academic Performance in Secondary Schools in Sironko Town Council, Sironko District(2015) Dawuda, AbdullahiThe Research Study Was Conducted On Influence Of Discipline Management On Students’ Academic Performance In Secondary Schools In Sironko Town Council, Sironko District. The study was prompted by the fact that between 2002 and 2006 the academic performance in the secondary schools in Mbale district at the Uganda Certificate of Education examinations was very poor compared to the overall national performance. Also, in 2003, the Education Standards Agency carried out a survey in which they found out that the staff motivation in the secondary schools in Mbale was inadequate. The researcher therefore found it necessary to undertake this study to find out if the poor school academic performance was accounted for by the inadequate staff motivation. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design in which interviews and questionnaires were used to collect data from head teachers, chairmen BOG/PTA, teachers and members of the support staff in the selected secondary schools. The results of the study indicated that all the secondary schools surveyed offer some motivational strategies to the teachers; for example allowances such as PTA, transport, accommodation and honorarium. However, the motivation is not only inadequate but it varies from one school to another. The results further indicated that the teachers are influenced differently by the motivation offered to them. To some, the motivation offered positively influences them to become committed to teaching while majority of them do not get influenced by the motivation offered. It was also found out that inadequate motivation has a negative influence on the schools’ academic performance. The study recommends, among other things, provision of both monetary and non monetary incentives to the teachers in the secondary schools in Mbale district to help enhance their commitment to teaching so as to improve on the schools’ academic performance.Item Parental Involvement and Academic Performance of Students in Secondary Schools in NakalokeTown Council, Uganda(2015) Abdulkarim, UsmanThis Study Examined The Extent To Which Parental Involvement Influences Academic Performance Of Students In Secondary Schools In Nakaloke Town Council. This region covers 9 PTCs; (Nakaseke Core PTC. Bususbizi Core PTC, Kabulasoke Core PTC, Kibuli Core PTC, Ndegeya Core PTC. Shimoni Core PTC, Nkokonjeru PTC. Kabukunge PTC and Rakai PTC) the study employed a cross sectional research design where qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques were used. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from a sample of 55 tutors and 165 student teachers. The study was aimed at finding out how effective the staffing procedures used in recruiting PTC tutors in the Central Region of Uganda are, how tutor staffing affects students’ academic performance in PTCs in the Central Region of Uganda and the challenges that are faced in staffing of PTC tutors in the Central Region of Uganda. The response rate based on the highest percentage of each of these categories was used to interpret the data. The major findings were that staffing procedures used in recruiting PTC tutors in the central region of Uganda involve the Education Service Commission openly advertising and inviting application from qualified and experienced teachers in both public and private institutions and then holding oral interviews to select candidates according to the minimum required standards set out in the advertisement. The current system, however, does not necessarily end as required in the last staffing steps and rarely implemented by the principals. It was also found that the staffing procedure currently being used does not provide for a method to recruit the most dedicated and hardworking tutors because these qualities may not be evident during oral interviews. It was also discovered that poor staffing conditions negatively affect students’ academic performance in PTCs in the Central region of Uganda in the sense that the few qualified tutors are overloaded with work, which means they cannot be as efficient and dedicated as they should be. The third finding was that the challenges that affect staffing in Colleges can be categorized as man-power shortage and work overloads on the few tutors available some subjects as a compensation measure and these are well known to stakeholders. The study recommended that there is need for the Education Service Commission to, a long academic and professional requirements, also demand a comprehensive recommendation or performance appraisal from previous employers or teachers of interview candidates to ensure that dedication and ability to work hard are factored into the recruitment process. In addition, the Education Service Commission should endeavor to recruit enough qualified and competent staff in order to make sure that all colleges are adequately staffed and thus students will be able to receive the attention they require to make them improve on their academic performance.Item Teachers’ Motivation and Students’ AcadePerformance at O’ Level in Secondary Schools in Mbale Municipality, Uganda.(2015) Muhammad, IshaqIn schools, teachers and students are always on the look out to gain fame, praise, promotion and material rewards from the supervisors, parents, guardians and administrators.
